  18. World War I. They fought in the desert in North Africa during
  19. World War II. They took part in an international military
  20. coalition in the Korean War. Their battles dominated TV screens
  21. during the Vietnam War. But the gulf war marks the first time
  22. that...

  24. <p>-- U.S. troops have been deployed to defend Israel. American
  25. crews are manning Patriot antimissile batteries.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>-- A massive oil spill was used as a military weapon.
  28. </p>
  29. <p>-- The U.N. has voted to enforce sanctions with military
  30. action.
  31. </p>
  32. <p>-- The Bob Hope Christmas Show was subjected to prior
  33. censorship. In deference to Saudi Muslim sensibilities, the
  34. Pentagon banned the Pointer Sisters and Marie Osmond from
  35. performing for the troops in Saudi Arabia.

  37. <p>-- The former World War II Allies (the U.S., Britain, France
  38. and the Soviet Union) and Axis powers (Germany, Italy and
  39. Japan) have been part of the same alliance.

  41. <p>-- Egyptians will fight on opposing sides. The coalition has
  42. 36,000 Egyptian troops, and the Iraqi army contains many
  43. Egyptian guest workers who were pressed into service.

  46. combat, when a Patriot downed a Scud.

  49. action.

  52. not been onscreen much lately, before putting him on the air.
  53. In the end, the network decided that the avuncular Cronkite mug
  54. would be sufficient ID.
